May and June 2007

Work has finally begun on the first phase of the lighthouse stabilization. The contractor, Taylor Brothers Marine Construction, from Beaufort, NC, is on site now driving the sheet piles that will form a cofferdam around the base of the lighthouse. The Contractor will be working all through the fall and into the winter to complete his work. His jack-up-barge can be seen from a great distance while it sits next to the lighthouse to drive the piles. All types of monitoring devices have been installed inside the lighthouse and outside to help monitor the conditions as the piles are vibrated down into the sand. A local company, WPC, is providing this part of the monitoring for the contractor. The devices monitor cracks for potential growth, possible lean and general vibration during the daily work. All of the windows in the lighthouse have no glass and the birds love to stay inside and even raise their young if not disturbed. Aerial photos, taken by Mr. Larry Workman, will be posted during the construction so that our members can see the results.

A live streaming video of the work on the lighthouse can be seen at Charleston Crystalball.
